lumadnong lantawan: capturing the best citylights view of cebu
Written by: Kevin Decares | January 09, 2024
When thinking of the Cebu City skyline, various vantage points come to my mind: Busay, Cebu Tops Lookout, Mountain View Nature’s Park, Marco Polo Plaza, and more. These upscale locations undoubtedly provide a magnificent scenic view of our beloved Queen City of the South—no arguments there.
However, there's always a catch. Booking a room, paying entrance fees, ordering from their menu, and shelling out substantial fares are often prerequisites to enjoying the view.
While this is fitting for some, it may be a strain on the pockets of others. Not everyone can afford to book a hotel just to savor the mesmerizing Cebu City skyline.
Fortunately, nestled in the uplands of Cebu, there's a secluded campsite that offers breathtaking city-light views at an incredibly affordable price — Lumadnong Lantawan.
This place is known by various names. Some refer to it as Lumadnong Lantawan Swimming Pool, as it boasts a 4-feet pool where you can unwind atop the mountain. Locals also call it Antuwanga, while hikers know it as San Carlos Heights.
However, I prefer to recognize it by its original name, as inscribed in the area: Lumadnong Lantawan. Paying homage to the lumads, the indigenous people inhabiting the place who own the area and have paved the way for us to relish a city-lights view at a remarkably reasonable price.
Located in the mountains of Quiot Pardo, Lumadnong Lantawan provides a swift escape from the bustling city. It's an ideal destination for a group of college students looking to spend their free time in a unique and offbeat manner. Alternatively, it caters to those seeking a solo short hike amidst a busy schedule for the remainder of the day.
This offers a beginner-friendly hiking experience, making it perfect for individuals interested in exploring the outdoors and breaking a sweat without the need for extensive preparations.
A short ride to Quiot Pardo via traditional or modern jeepneys will bring you to the iconic Santo Tomas de Villanueva Parish Church, a famous landmark where you will first stop.
Misconceptions have circulated, myself included; some have mistakenly associated this church with the secret organization called Illuminati due to its eye symbol, which bears a striking resemblance to the well-known Illuminati symbol.
However, it's important to clarify that the eye symbol at Santo Tomas de Villanueva Parish Church signifies the 'All Seeing God' or 'Omnipresent God,' representing God the Father. In Masonic Symbolism, the All-Seeing Eye of Providence is widely recognized as a beautiful representation of the watchful care of the Supreme Architect.
Facing the church, on the right side you will find a narrow way wherein you’ll ride a motorcycle bound for the 7/11 Store in Pardo. Then you will ride another motorcycle bound for the Jump-off point. Just be careful to tell the driver that you will be going to “Antuwanga”. Some drivers are not sure about the names so when going to this specific trail, just tell them “Antuwanga” to avoid arriving at the wrong locations. There is another trail but many said it's too steep so I preferred this in Quiot Pardo.
With a bright sun overhead, the hike to Lumadnong Lantawan offers both simplicity and ease. While the trail provides minimal shade, it compensates with breathtaking views. Life, much like hiking, is a symphony of good and bad. However, what makes this experience unique is that both the positive and challenging aspects contribute to a remarkable feeling of fulfillment.
The trail to Lumadnong Lantawan is predominantly grassland, offering a 90% exposure to the sun. Expect the warmth to envelop you as you traverse. If you're up for a challenging ascent, the trail is quite runnable. I recommend starting your hike early in the morning as dawn breaks, or if you plan to camp, commence your journey around 4:00 pm to avoid the intense midday sun.
As you gaze upon the sprawling cityscape from a distance, a sense of connection and affection for your beloved city naturally embraces you. Inhaling the fine-quality air that graces this elevated vantage point further enhances the experience, providing a refreshing contrast to the urban hustle and bustle below.
The trail is well-established and by just following it for 30 minutes to an hour, you’ll arrive to Lumadnong Lantawan.

It’s worth fighting for the lumads.
In a brief story shared by one of the Lumads, the Lumadnong Lantawan campsite unfolds a tale of legal battles and ownership disputes. This serene place has weathered the storm of court proceedings, with conflicting claims over its rightful owners. Against the odds, the Lumads emerged victorious in their legal battle, securing their rightful ownership of this area.
This victory not only symbolizes the Lumads' resilience and determination but also signifies a triumph of justice and a testament to the deep connection they hold with the land. This added a layer of significance to Lumadnong Lantawan, turning it into more than just a campsite—it is their home.
Situated near the city, Lumadnong Lantawan offers a spectacular view of the city lights during the evening, creating a priceless visual treat. The illuminated landscape resembles an enchanting ocean of lights, inviting you to metaphorically swim within its sparkling waves. This close-up perspective provides a more captivating experience compared to the upscale vantage points I’ve mentioned earlier.
It’s a different vibe during the night accompanied by a gentle breeze, the melodic symphony of crickets, and the rhythmic beats of a city winding down. It feels as though Cebu itself is talking silently with me. Each tiny light below represents a Cebuano, living their unique story. The rapid montage of lights unfolds the diverse narratives of the Cebuanos thriving in the city.
Just the thought of these noises; The bustling of roaring cars, the hurried rush of people resembling tidal waves, and crowded intersections, there's an ironic comfort those loud clamors up here. It paints a picture of a somewhat cynical yet endearing society. The very essence of Cebu's liveliness is what makes it so lovable. Even from afar, I can still discern the echoes of every Cebuano, resonating in this ocean of lights.
